Isle of Skye from Inverness: Fairy Pools or Eilean Donan?

Updated October 24, 2026 · 6 min read

Green Highland slopes descending towards a sea loch beneath a broad cloudy sky

Choose by the stop you would regret missing. The Skye and Eilean Donan day trip is the strongest all-round option: 12 hours, €82.36, 4.8 from 5,073 reviews, with Portree and Lealt Falls named in the route. If the Fairy Pools are the point of the day, take the Fairy Pools day trip instead. It also lasts 12 hours and starts at €94.29.

What fits into twelve hours

Skye is not a short excursion from Inverness. A large share of the day is spent crossing the Highlands, and every additional stop reduces the time at the next one. The standard Eilean Donan route names Loch Ness, Eilean Donan Castle, Portree and Lealt Falls. That gives you a varied first view of Skye, but not a slow island day.

The Fairy Pools version exchanges some of that east-coast sightseeing for a walk in Glenbrittle. Walking guides give about 2.4 km from the car park to the largest waterfall. It is a real outdoor stop, not a photograph from the coach. Wet ground, wind or a slower group can shorten the remaining stops.

Three sensible choices

The prices are starting prices and availability changes. Castle admission and the exact time at each stop must be checked on the booking page rather than assumed from the title.

When a day tour is the right answer

A tour works well when you have one free day, do not want to drive single-track roads and accept that Skye will be a sequence of selected stops. It is also useful in a mixed group where nobody wants to be the designated driver for a very long day.

It is a poor fit if you want a long hike, sunset light or time to wait for weather to clear. For that, stay on Skye. The two-day Skye, Fairy Pools and castles tour begins at €181.54 and removes the same-day return, though accommodation details still need checking.

Our recommendation

For most first visits, book the Skye and Eilean Donan day trip. Choose the Fairy Pools route only when that walk matters more than seeing more of the island. Whichever you choose, bring waterproof layers and treat the advertised itinerary as a plan that weather and traffic may alter.
